Man Boobs and Its Many Causes

By Tyler Keen

Man boobs, or its medical term, gynecomastia is a relatively common condition in men which describes the formation of enlarged breast tissue. It is very common in young babies, including neonates and young boys around the age of puberty. This is due to the fluctuating hormone levels in these age groups and will normally correct itself over time.

Man boobs in the older age group such as after puberty are the type that are often due to other causes and be a bit more difficult to get rid of. Probably the most frequent cause is being overweight. You do not necessarily need to be obese to be overweight as it can even occur if you a slightly overweight. The biggest reasons for this are that some men have more fat cells in the breast tissue area and this is just where the body's fat tends to collect.

If you happen to be in the obese, or very overweight group, the fat will collect in the breast area as it does all over the body. The fat cells in the body produce the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for breast formation in females. As you can figure out, therefore, if you are overweight and have more fat you are going to be producing more estrogen which, in turn, is going to make you develop breasts.

Medication is another common cause of man boobs. It is not just taking estrogen that is going to increase breast development. Many body builders often find, when taking testosterone, they develop man boobs. The reason for this is that some of the testosterone is actually converted to estrogen in the body.

Many body builders who are taking testosterone often take additional medication to counteract its effect. An example of one such drug is the breast cancer treatment drug, tamoxifen. Other, non hormone drugs, however, such as omeprazole, spironolactone and cimetidine can also cause man boobs.

Breast tissue formation can also be due to any number of underlying diseases or conditions. Examples of some include, kidney disease, liver disease and some tumors of the testicles. These conditions cause man boobs by increasing the circulating levels of estrogen like hormones by either increasing their production, or reducing the rate at which they are metabolized. As such, for any men that develop gynecomsatia it is advisable to consult your physician to rule out any causes.

Knowing the possible causes can help in the getting rid of man boobs. However, for the majority the cause is largely unknown or being overweight.
