Ferguson, MD

Two recent studies have found the positive impact walnuts have on reducing prostate and breast cancer cell growth.

The first study, conducted by Dr. Paul Davis, of the University of California, also determined in addition to inhibiting prostate cancer development, the mice had lower levels of a protein, IGF (insulin-like growth factor) that is strongly linked to prostate cancer.

Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acid rich walnuts, antioxidants, and other plant chemicals have the ability to suppress gene activity within the prostate cancer cells.

These findings show the additional benefits of walnuts, already known to be good for the heart and brain.

The genetically programmed to get prostate cancer mice were fed for 4.5 months (18 weeks) either a diet equivalent to a human consuming 2.4 ounces of walnuts per day, or one with an equal amount of fat from other sources.

"This study shows that when mice with prostate tumors consume an amount of walnuts that could easily be eaten by a man, tumor growth is controlled," Davis said in a statement. "This leaves me very hopeful that it could be beneficial in patients."

A second study reported in 2009 similarly found that walnut consumption may also provide the essential omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and plant sterols.

Walnut consumption may provide the body with essential omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols that reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 100th Annual Meeting 2009. Elaine Hardman, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at Marshall University School of Medicine, said that while her study was done with laboratory animals rather than humans, people should heed the recommendation to eat more walnuts.

"Walnuts are better than cookies, french fries or potato chips when you need a snack," said Hardman. "We know that a healthy diet overall prevents all manner of chronic diseases."

Dr. Hardman and colleagues evaluated mice fed a diet equal to daily consumption of 2 ounces of walnut. Another group of mice were fed a different diet.

The mice that ate walnuts had significantly decreased breast tumor incidence, the number of glands with a tumor and tumor size.

"These laboratory mice typically have 100 percent tumor incidence at five months; walnut consumption delayed those tumors by at least three weeks," said Hardman.

Chemical analysis showed that increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids contributed to the drop fouin tumor incidence, but other parts of the walnut contributed as well.

"With dietary interventions you see multiple mechanisms when working with the whole food," said Hardman. "It is clear that walnuts contribute to a healthy diet that can reduce breast cancer.

About the Author:

Looking to find the best deal on cancer prevention, then visit www.howtogetwellfaster.com to find the best advice on holistic medicine for you.

Beyond Early Detection: How to Reduce Breast Cancer

By Elaine R. In the United States, there were more than 190,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths, in 2009 alone. European women experienced almost 421,000 new cases and nearly 90,000 deaths in 2008, the most recent data available.

Obese , women have a 60 percent increased risk of developing breast cancer, compared to women with normal weight, according to a 2006 study conducted in the UK found that obese

"What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, chairman of the Epidemiology Department at the University of Milan, said in an interview. "It's time to move on to other things."

Dr. La Vecchia spoke at a European breast cancer conference in Barcelona. He acknowledged information from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimates that 25 to 30 per cent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more. The agency is part of the World Health Organization.

Better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed breast cancer, but experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors such as diet and physical activity.

"What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Dr. La Vecchia, said in an interview. "It's time to move on to other things."

His remarks are in accord with new advice that lifestyle modifications, including smoking cessation, diet, sun exposure and exercise, play a major role in the risk of developing several cancers.

About the Author:

Want to find out more about cancer prevention, then visit Elaine R. There cannot be many people who are excited about aging but like it or not, we all must go through it. Thinking about caring for your skin should be done at a young age. The fact is however that young people do not think about it until it is too late. Alternatively, there are procedures available to people when developing and maintaining skin health.

People who are looking to care for their skin to keep it healthy can turn to cosmetic treatments. Although these treatments are not a miracle cure, they can help you maintain healthy skin. Your skin will look great even if you do not feel that way.

There are many products on the market today that advertise they will keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant. These products range from creams, clothing, powders and wrapping, among others. You will find that these products do not work. Customers spend many hours and a lot of money searching for the right product but never seem to find it. Commercials advertise different celebrities using a certain brand and this is where people choose their product.

When you are ready to start looking into cosmetic procedure, you will first want to do your research on the different types. Contact a doctor can help you when choosing a treatment best for you. Typically a doctor will consider your health and your age when deciding your treatment. There are a variety of treatments and some are listed below.

When having healthy skin a popular type of treatment is the face lift. People over the age of 40 can try this treatment. This treatment will tighten the skin and appear to look normal for those individuals who are older. Depending on your situation and your doctor, the treatment may be an inpatient or outpatient. The treatment can last up to 10 years.

Another type of face lift is injections of Botox. The muscles are paralyzed during this treatment and parts of the body are fixed in certain positions. In Hollywood, celebrities often use Botox when maintaining their skin. Usually this is done to help with the lines around the mouth and on the forehead.

Lines around the eyes are another sign of aging. These lines, also called crows feet come out from the corner of the eyes and they look like the feet of a crow. Laser surgery may lessen the problem of this and the eye lids can also be fixed. Eyes can be reshaped by this procedure.

A person can also have their lips reshaped when they get older, which will lessen any wrinkles. This is a simple process that has a quick recovery. This treatment will result in eliminating wrinkles and looking younger.

Whether you get one treatment or multiple treatments for different areas of your skin, an important fact is to continue to maintain your skin. Developing and maintaining healthy skin can be a struggle. Cosmetic treatments can help you move in the right direction. These treatments can last between 5 and 10 years so a person needs to continue to maintain healthy skin using other natural ways, exercising and eating correctly. This will slow down the aging process.

About the Author:

State of the Art Plastic Surgery offering a variety of medical cosmetic procedures including breast augmentation, breast augmentation in Toronto, skin rejuvenation, liposuction in Toronto, Botox, Tummy Tuck.

Breast Cancer Survivor - How Can You Make A Difference

By Marjory Cameron

Breast cancer really is a huge challenge which brings with it far reaching consequences and implications. The issues and problems that show themselves in the context of the breast cancer journey can be far reaching. The fear and tension associated with coping can cause psychological and emotional damage both for actual patient, her spouse as well as her extended family. Close friends as well as workmates often find things change dramatically and this can often be hard to adapt to.

Breast cancer is definitely getting much more prevalent - there must scarcely exist a household within the United states or even United kingdom that has missed been affected by cancer in some manner. And in men too the number of cases of breast cancer goes on consistently rising. It's not only women. We learned just recently of a couple in Birmingham, United kingdom when both husband and wife were found to have cancer of the breast.

Countless charity organisations, voluntary groups and patient support agencies seek to raise money each year to help combat breast cancer. Some of these focus on local issues and on providing support for people in their own region. Others operate on a national or even international scale. All need money to keep up their good works however and seem to be constantly seeking novel or imaginative ways to keep the dollars and pounds coming in.

Susan G Komen was a breast cancer sufferer who formed what was to begin with a small scale fund raising project. It has now grown to become one of the biggest and most important medical charities in the world. The Komen foundation is probably best known for their races that they organize in every major city in the USA and in other countries too. Race For Life in the UK is a similar concept.

The Komen races cover a wide range of challenges and distances - from short fun runs to the longest ultra marathon. You can choose the one that suits you best. The main thing is that you get yourself out there and take part. These events earn the charity millions of dollars annually and bring great attention and media interest too. The celebrities who take part bring the media circus with them - and everyone benefits.

If you can't imagine coping with even a short run then you can have the choice of participating in long distance sponsored walking spread around a couple of days. Quite a few of these types of charity walks grab the attention of tens of thousands who take part. One in the United kingdom is known as the Moon Walk. It begins at midnight and almost all those people that do it put on embellished and amazing bras.

Individuals generate cash for breast cancer both separately as well as within teams. You may merely donate funds in your area or even get involved with a fund raising event and convince all your own pals to sponsor you. The most important thing is that you go ahead and do it.

If you really feel in a position to contribute cash for breast cancer research then make sure you do because each gift of money might be vital. You are not invisible and it could very well strike you at any given moment. Below, we are going to tell you a bit about this horrible cancer.

Lobular Carcinoma will start in the part of the breast which is called lobules. In certain rare cases breast cancer can also start in other areas of the breast. Early detection of breast cancer is the main key to getting it into remission and leads to much higher rates of survival. You should always do self breast exams and if you are over the age of thirty-five you should get a yearly mammogram.

Lobular Carcinoma starts in the lobules. There are rare cases where this problem has started in a different area of the breast but this is extremely uncommon. The best key to survival is early detection. This will help you get this evil disease into remission and hopefully never return. Early detection leads to the best and highest chance of survival. Women should always do self breast examinations and should schedule yearly mammograms once you reach thirty five years of age.

Stage Two is around ninety two percent. Stage Three is sixty seven percent and Stage Four is around twenty percent. Monthly self breast exams and yearly mammograms are two of the best ways to detect cancer very early. The stressing of monthly self breast exams can not be given enough.

The very beginning stages of this problem cannot be seen or felt but as the disease progresses these symptoms may or may not appear. You may notice one or both of your nipples changing in size and appearance, the breasts may start to feel very lumpy. You may also feel lumps in your armpits. The lumps may be very tough and hard to the touch and your nipples may begin to drip or leak.

Chest Cancer progression may cause some if not all of the following symptoms: Your bones may hurt, your breasts may have a little or a lot of discomfort, one of your arms may become enlarged or swollen, skin ulcers may develop and rapid weight loss may occur.

Cancer treatments may include the following: Hormonal therapy to block certain hormones that fuel cancer growth, targeted therapy to interfere with cancer cell growth and function, radiation therapy which helps to destroy all of the tissue that has cancer in it, chemotherapy which helps to destroy the cells causing cancer and surgery to eradicate all traces of the cancer. This may include a lumpectomy or a mastectomy depending on personal choice and the severity of the cancer. Also, hormonal Therapy and Targeted therapy may be discussed and tried.

At age twenty and over start and continue with monthly breast exams. Women who are thirty five and older need to get yearly mammograms. Depending on your families history with breast cancer you may wish to consult your physician regarding what types of early testing you can do.

About the Author:

Visit Personal Labs for their comprehensive Female Cancer Screening Service! Breast cancer is the second deadly disease in women, heart disease being number one. It is not known yet why and how women are getting breast cancer, but there are risk factors for breast cancerthat we can now identify.

The first risk factor is the family history of breast cancer. If a close relative, like a mother and/or sister, has developed breast cancer then there is a high chance another female family member will develop breast cancer. If this is the case, the breast specialist might recommend the woman with breast cancer take a gene test to identify whether or not she is a carrier for the disease.

If there is strong family history of breast cancer, the specialist may recommend the woman to take a gene test. The gene test consists of two tests, BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. The test will identify whether or not the woman is a carrier for breast cancer. This test will help determine the preventive care for herself and her children.

The two gene tests are BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. This test will determine if the woman or family member is the carrier for the breast cancer gene. If this is positive, it will help the doctor and the carrier to determine how to detect breast cancer early in the family.

Diseases of the breast can be a risk factor. Changes in the cells in the breasts can lead to an abnormal cell called atypical hyperplasia, which can increase the possibility of turning into cancer cells down the road. In recent years, there were studies that showed excessive radiation, especially at a young age, can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Too much radiation from x-rays can be detriment to a woman's health in later years.

Woman who live an unhealthy lifestyle and are over weight are considered a risk for breast cancer. It is important for women to know this fact so they can lose weight and eat healthy in order to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer.

Other risks includes early menstrual cycle in girls, delay in having kids until her 30's, never having children, delay in menopause after the age of 55, women taking years of menopausal hormone therapy, and race can all be high risk factors in getting breast cancer. A woman should always consult with her physician if she feels she may be at risk for breast cancer. It is recommended that a woman performs monthly self breast exams to identify changes in her breasts. If there are any changes or concerns, she should immediately consult her physician.

About the Author:

Martha Jones is a young breast cancer survivor that promotes early detection, awareness in young women, and living a healthier life after breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Survivors Blog For Others

By Marjory Cameron

Breast cancer will never be a rare predicament these days, it affects millions of ladies worldwide and large numbers of brand-new examples tend to be clinically determined every day. The older someone gets, their skin health ages and starts to wrinkle. It looks like it is just hanging off your bones. As much as people would like to freeze time before their skin looks like that, it just is not possible. On the other hand, there are techniques for developing and maintaining healthy skin.

Cosmetic treatments are available to individuals looking to have healthy skin. These treatments can help with the look you are trying to have. Whether you feel young or feel older than you are, your skin will have a look of its own!

Many products are available and are on the market that advertises that they keep their skin healthy. These include but not limited to creams, clothing and wrappings. More likely than not, these products do not work. Consumers spend hours shopping for the best product they think will help their skin. Many will purchase products just because they saw a commercial with a celebrity promoting their product.

Once you have decided that you are ready to try cosmetic treatment you will need to learn about which treatment is works best for you. Talking to a doctor would be in your best interest since they know what to consider when determining your options. Doctors should consider the health and age of a person when choosing the options for you. There are many treatment options available and are listed below.

The facelift is the most popular type of treatment when wanting to develop healthy skin. Those over the ago of 40 may be able to have this treatment. This procedure involves tightening of the skin and improving the skin so it looks normal on those who are older. The operation can be inpatient or outpatient, depending what your doctor chooses. The procedure will last up to 10 years.

Another type of facelift is Botox injection. This procedure paralyzes the muscles and certain parts of the body are fixed in specific positions. Those who are maintaining their skin may choose this option. Celebrities are often heard of frequently getting Botox done. Typically this is done because people want to reduce their lines around the mouth or on the forehead.

Another sign of aging is the lines around your eyes. Normally, there are lines coming from the corner of the eyes and is otherwise referred to as crows feet. Surgeries using lasers can correct problems like these and to correct the eye lids and can fix the eyes of a person.

Just as the lines near the eye, many people have lines around the lips as they age. An individual can have their lips reshaped, which in turns will lessen the lines. After this surgery, the recovery is quick. By having this procedure done you will appear to look younger.

It does not matter which treatment or treatments you try, it is in your favor to talk to a physician about all your options. These are not permanent cures to healthy skin. Exercising and eating the right foods will help prolong signs of aging. There is no miracle cure for aging, we will all experience this. However, there are ways to slow down the process when developing and maintaining healthy skin.

About the Author:

State of the Art Plastic Surgery offering a variety of medical cosmetic procedures including breast augmentation, Breast Surgery Toronto, skin rejuvenation, liposuction Toronto, Botox, Tummy Tuck.

Mastectomy - How To Find A Bra That Fits After A Mastectomy

By Marjory Cameron

Finding the perfect clothes after mastectomy surgery treatment can be a true problem and brings about a great deal of pressure for countless women. The time after surgical procedures is usually tense and apart from the pain or distress of the operation there is as well the challenge regarding the missing self esteem and the great loss of self-assurance which the surgical procedures and the cancer tumor brings.

For women that have required mastectomy surgical treatment there are lots of issues to be prepared for. After the early stages of recovery when nearly all women will use no prosthesis, or just wear a soft material breast form for ease and comfort.

Deciding upon and fitting a suitable prosthesis is sometimes postponed for several weeks until the chest wall heals and until chemotherapy or radiotherapy is over.

Nearly all women who've had a mastectomy will wear specially adapted underwear. This is supposed to permit them to wear normal clothing and to return to a sense of feeling normal - but the choice is usually tricky.

Mastectomy bras are made utilizing pouches in the cup area to support a breast prosthesis.

There is a wide variety of designs and colors of mastectomy bras and more and more are now being put into the market all the time. Design and fit enhancements tend to be continually evolving too. If you're unsatisfied with the ease and comfort and fit of your present mastectomy bra, then I would advise that you carry on your search.

The silicone breast prosthesis simulates the natural bust in its contour and weight. The principle benefit of prosthesis is to offer evenness and good balance to a breast cancer survivor's body. Obtaining correct prosthesis is essentially critical to your final level of comfort.

With a good fitting prosthesis, and a well-designed and measured mastectomy bra, you will be helping to balance your own posture and still provide proper protection for the chest and breast tumors scars. In addition, you'll reduce your chances of back complications and shoulder and neck ache. And also, your favorite pre-surgery clothing will continue to fit you properly.

About the Author:

Learn more about being a breast cancer survivor. Breast Augmentation, or Breast Enlargement Surgery, is a medical procedure than involves enlarging the breasts. The purpose of the procedure is to create fuller and shapelier breasts. Women tend to choose this type of surgery because they have small breasts and want breasts that are in proportion with the rest of their body, they had a mastectomy and want to restore their breast size, or they want to lift saggy breasts. When considering breast enlargement surgery, it is important to be aware of the health issues of having this medical procedure.

Breast enlargement involves inserting either saline implants or silicone implants through a small incision that is made just under the lower part of the nipple or breast fold. The small incision will normally heal to a very fine scar in about 6 months following the procedure. As well, it will fade so it becomes barely noticeable. The surgery is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. There is mild pain but it can be managed using pain medication.

In the past, there have been some concerns about the safety of silicone implants. These concerns have resulted in a number of studies that focused on whether or not there is a correlation between silicone implants and breast cancer. In their book, 'Safety of Silicone Breast Implants,' Stuart Bondurant, Virginia Ernster, and Roger Herdman, present a well-documented and well-researched assessment about the safety of silicone breast implants. Based on their review and analysis of the scientific research, they determined that there was no definitive evidence that supported a correlation between silicone breast implants and the instances of cancer. Recently, silicone breast implants have returned as an option for women seeking breast enlargement surgery. Saline breast implants are still a popular choice because the saline is much like the fluids in your body, so if the implant leaks, the saline will be absorbed by the body with no health consequences.

Although quite uncommon, there are other risks associated with breast enlargement that one should be aware of before undergoing the surgery. For instance, capsular contraction is a condition where the cavity that holds the implant begins to shrink. It is not life threatening, but there will be some distortion and pain associated with the condition. Infection may also occur after the procedure; however, it can be cleared up with antibiotics. As well, there may also be bleeding after the procedure. This bleeding can take place in the pocket holding the breast implant, but it is another rare side effect that is not life threatening.

Breast enlargement has continued to be a popular procedure for millions of women. The improvements in the surgery have made breast enlargement a minimally invasive procedure. The surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours and the patient can usually go home the day of the surgery and remain in a state of rest for the following 48 hours. There may be some discomfort such as swelling, discoloration, and pain. Most patients return to work within 1 to 2 weeks. One can return to an active lifestyle in about 4 weeks.

Breast enlargement will significantly enhance a person's outer appearance as many who have undergone the procedure have reported a boost in self-confidence and self-esteem. However, it is important not to think that this procedure will make you a better person. One's self respect comes from the inside. As well, it should also not be performed to make someone else happy or be accepted. It is important to have realistic expectations when considering breast enlargement. Breast augmentation can be a very rewarding experience if you are healthy and have sensible expectations. There are number of quality breast surgery Toronto clinics and surgeons that you should consult with before you choose to undergo the procedure.

About the Author:

State of the Art Cosmetic Surgery Toronto Clinic offering a variety of medical cosmetic procedures including breast augmentation, skin rejuvenation, liposuction Toronto, Botox, Tummy Tuck.

Do You Take Fish Oil? Cancer Sufferers Have Powerful Reasons To Supplement With Omega3 Fats.

By Peter Leigh

Do you, every single day, supplement your diet with omega 3 supplements that contain fish oil? Cancer sufferers, and for that matter everyone else, have extremely powerful reasons to take daily doses of fish oil supplements.

The average American diet is inadequate in the 2 important essential fatty acids known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). These are found in fish oil and studies have consistently shown for many years that those with an adequate intake of these 2 important Omega 3 essential fatty acids are generally more healthy than those who have low intakes.

There's a wide range of benefits to taking fish oil supplements and these include reducing your risk of dying from heart attack as well as many other heart health benefits together with a range of improvements in many other areas of your health.

However evidence is now mounting of a clear fish oil cancer reduction link as well as a link between Omega 3 supplementation and other improved health outcomes. Studies are clearly demonstrating that improving the level of your nutrition by increasing your intake of essential fats can benefit a range of cancerous conditions such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer (colon cancer), prostate cancer and many others, both in prevention and better outcomes to treatment.

Whilst it's difficult to say at what point there is sufficient evidence to say that the link between increasing your intake of fish oil and reducing your risk of cancer is fully proven, the evidence is mounting. Studies are now showing that those who, for example, supplement with fish oil can achieve up to a 37 percent reduction in the risk of bowel cancer.

And there is also a link between increasing fish oil intake and breast cancer reduction. On top of this evidence is mounting of a link between increasing your intake of fish oil and a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer.

Both breast cancer and prostate cancer are some of the biggest killers of our men and women, and there is increasing evidence that if we all start to increase our currently inadequate levels of omega 3 essential fatty acid intake we can lower our risks of contracting these 2 deadly cancers.

For a wide range of reasons it is now clear that you should be supplementing your diet with fish oil. Cancer sufferers, and everyone, have powerful health reasons to start to reverse the declining trend in our society in eating fish.

Of course to increase your intake of fish oil you can eat more fish. But fish can be contaminated with industrial chemicals, particularly fish at the top of the food chain, and for this reason the FDA tells us not to eat too much. However the good news is that it is entirely possible to get omega 3 fish oil supplements that are completely free of any chemical contamination and which are safe to take every single day.

But essential fatty acids are not the only natural substance which have been shown to have a role in reducing the risks of cancer. There is also growing evidence that substances such as lycopene can also do this as well.

Lycopene is found in tomatoes and has a wide range of health benefits including, according to an increasing range of studies, also reducing our risks of cancer.

And as the scientific evidence becomes stronger there are some very good companies producing powerful health products that make use of cutting edge modern research to produce products that allow us to take advantage of these new scientific breakthroughs. For example it is now possible to get omega 3 supplements that not only include fish oil as an active ingredient but which also include lycopene to increase the effectiveness of the supplements in fighting cancer.

There are clear health benefits to all of us increasing our intake of omega 3 supplements containing fish oil. The possibility of cancer reduction is one of those benefits, but there are many others.

If you'd like to find out more about the health benefits of fish oil supplementation, or about where to find the new generation of omega 3 supplements containing lycopene then you can do so on my website.

About the Author:

Want to know more about the health benefits of Fish Oil? What IS erythrocyanosis? This little known name is actually something very common - Stretch Marks. Everyone knows that stretch marks are scars that happen when your skin is overstretched. What are the top 2 causes: Pregnancy and Weight Gain.

Stretch marks have the initial appearance of purple or red looking lines. In time Stretch Marks can fade to a white or off white color.Stretch Marks are a VERY common condition. Just think of all the people who are either pregnant or overweight!

Stretch Marks are not just confined to the female population either - few people realize that they are a common complaint of male body builders. Stretch Mark Treatments vary from out-and-out scams to some very smart and scientific remedies.

Dermabrasion is a medical procedure that takes place under a general anesthetic. The process is sanding the surface of your skin. After this sanding takes place, the goal is to remove or lessen the appearance of scars, sun damage, or spots.

The procedure is obviously very painful (hence the general anesthetic) and the healing process can take several months. However, the results can be quite spectacular.

The main warnings are as always, being put under general anesthetic is always something to be concerned with. It can be life-threatening and has risks involved. Make sure you speak to more than one doctor when considering a procedure like this.

Be Warned: Having a general anesthetic is NOT something to be taken lightly; it carries inherent risks and can be life-threatening. Always seek a second medical opinion (speak to more than one doctor).

Microdermabrasion is the least intrusive procedure, but it is a medical procedure nonetheless. It is very popular and common in the Day Spa industry.

Here in Microdermabrasion, the top surface layer of skin is removed by a lighter wand that sands the skin. The dead layer of skin is removed by a vacuum device that sucks the skin away.

As for creams that say they are specifically designed for stretch mark removal, just be aware of the outrageous claims. Ask them for before and after photographs of their last 30-50 clients. Ask for testimonials in writing.

About the Author:

Want to find out more about plastic surgery, than visit botox injection los angeles, then visit DrYoho's site on how to choose the best Botox Los Angeles doctor for your needs.

Why On Earth Do We Get Stretch Marks?

By Robert Smith

Inevitably, no matter how beautiful your skin may be today, you will develop stretch marks. Although painless, stretch marks are both unsightly and a potential source of embarrassment. For the most part, you are stuck with stretch marks unless you opt for expensive laser therapy or perhaps dermabrasion. But why exactly do stretch marks form in the first place?

You have three layers of skin on your body: The epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis. I know this isn't physiology class, but you need to know this. Even though you see stretch marks on the top layer of your skin, the stretching occurs underneath in the middle, dermis layer of your skin. The middle layer, the dermis, is where the collagen and elasticity are & where the stretching takes place.

Stretch marks, also known as stria atrophica, form in the dermis layer of your skin. In fact, stretch marks are literally tears in the dermis. Now stretch marks should not be confused with scars, although they do appear quite similar when looking at them. Scars are made of fibrotic tissue which is simply not present in stretch marks.

As stated earlier, the dermis produces elastic fibers. These special fibers are what allows your skin to stretch-basically, they give the skin its elasticity. Stretch marks form when the skin grows faster than the elastic fibers can handle. Rapid growth weakens a skin's elasticity and can actually break the connective fibers holding it together.

Occasionally, you can get stretch marks when this rapid growth doesn't happen. Poor diet and improper nutrition can hurt the body and cause it to produce less of the things that it needs to have elastic and healthy skin. If you smoke, this can also weaken the ability for the skin to stretch. But you need to have some growth for the skin to stretch, even with these factors.

Stretch marks are very common problems associated with pregnancy because this is a period of rapid growth for women. Any period of rapid weight gain will most likely be accompanied by stretch marks and they are common factors in obesity. However, it is possible for heredity to be a factor as some people have proven more prone to stretch marks than others.

What the stretch marks look like have more to do with how recent you got them rather than where they are on your body. If they are red and purple, it is early in the stretch mark process. If they are white or lighter than your skin, then it is usually the later stages of those initial marks.

Even though they are embarrassing to some, they are mainly painless. Here is a brief overview of the different types of image tests:

Before women choose their breast cancer treatment with their physicians, they have chest x-rays to determine their heart and lung capacity. This test evaluates the lungs, heart, ribs, and diaphragm and is the most common diagnostic x-ray examination. It produces images of the heart, lungs, airways, blood vessels and spinal and chest bones and is generally completed within 15 minutes. This procedure is painless and physicians can have results almost immediately.

The mammogram is an x-ray test that is used for women with signs or no signs of breast cancer. It is recommended by the National Cancer institute that women above age 40 get a mammogram every one to two years. It is also stated that women of higher risks may need to be checked more often or earlier than age 40. Physicians insist that if you are at higher risk, the most effective way to identify breast cancer early is through both a clinical breast exam and mammogram.

The bone scan checks to see if cancer has spread from a tumor in an organ to their bones. It checks the entire body at once by inserting radioactive material into blood vessels that travel throughout the patient's bloodstream. After it has traveled a scanner then checks to see the material collect in the bones.

A Computed Tomography (CT) Scan is a machine that rotates around a patient and takes several pictures of the body. The pictures are then merged and sliced into different parts of the body, which are usually the chest and abdomen in breast cancer patients. The process of this type of imaging test lasts for a longer time period than other x-ray exams, as the patient lies still on a table that moves in and out of the scanning machine.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan uses radio waves and strong magnets that are turned into detailed pictures of the body to check for tumors. If the patient has been already diagnosed MRI scans can be used to determine the size of the tumor.

The ultrasound technique produces pictures, called sonograms, of soft tissues that do not always appear on x-rays. For breast cancer patients, ultrasounds are used to differentiate between tumors and cysts, as well as to inspect lumps that are difficult to see on mammograms. They are commonly used and less expensive than other image tests.

PET scans are not as detailed as CT or MRI scans, but is useful for finding out where the cancer has spread across the entire body. The way this is done is by injecting the patient with a substance of sugar and radioactive material and after 45 minutes of the substance flowing through the body, the PET scanner translates the radiation it detects into pictures.

About the Author:

SaveRBoobies offers free resources and information to women before and after breast cancer treatments. It is a type of breast cancer that is inflamed or swollen and has a red appearance instead of a lump form. It is harder to detect because you can not feel it like a lump. It is an aggressive cancer although it is a rare form of breast cancer.

Some signs to look for are: bruising around the breasts, pain, difference in texture and thickness of the breast, nipple discharge, burning sensation, and aching. If any of these symptoms occur, you must go seek a physician right away.

Once the doctor determines the possibility of breast cancer, the next step in diagnosis is a mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy, and/or positron emission tomography (PET) scan. Once the diagnosis for breast cancer is confirmed, the treatments to kill the cancer cells could include: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and/or surgery.

Chemotherapy is usually the first step of treatment and affects the cells throughout the entire body. The goal of chemotherapy is to destroy the cancer cells that may have spread throughout the body. Because chemotherapy treatment can not determine the bad from the good cells, chemotherapy will destroy all cells. One of the effects of chemotherapy is hair loss throughout the body.

After chemotherapy treatments are completed, the next step in fighting breast cancer is surgery and/or radiation therapy. Surgery can be the removal of the breast and surrounding tissues. Radiation therapy is more targeted to the cancer area than chemotherapy.

Inflammatory Breast cancer is considered more aggressive than other types of breast cancer because it can spread throughout the body faster and it is harder to detect through screening tools. The National Cancer Institute states the survival rates for IBC patients is from 25 to 50 percent. Although these numbers are low, the institute's the statistics is based on a large number of patients. They urge people to seek their physician in regards to their condition.

To emphasis on early detection, it is recommended that women at all ages should perform a monthly breast self exam. This monthly exam will allow women to detect any changes in their breasts. If a woman find anything unusual or feel any discomfort, she should see her physician as soon as possible.

About the Author:

SaveRBoobies offers free resources and information to women before and after breast cancer treatments. Don't be afraid to accept the help of friends and family and if you have questions or worries, always ask one of your medical care team to explain things to you.

Telling friends, family and work colleagues

Telling someone that you have cancer is a very difficult thing to do. Many people are shocked and find it difficult to know what to say. Give them time and whatever you do, don't feel guilty for how they feel about it. Accept that some friends may find it so difficult to deal with that they may begin avoid you. This is their problem and not yours. Don't waste time worrying over their friendship because the people who do stick around are your true friends. If it's easier then ask a close friend or family member to let everyone else know. They can also act as an information point because people will want to know how you are at various stages of your treatment.

Understanding your treatment plan

You will be given a team of doctors that will include surgeons, oncologists, specialist breast care nurses and radiographers. These are your team, they are experienced and have seen and dealt with many cases like yours. Remember, they're used to questions so don't be afraid to ask them anything you need to know. If you have any questions about your treatment plan then your breast care nurse is your first point of information. If she doesn't know the answer to your question, she'll find out for you.

Going in to hospital

For many people having surgery for breast cancer this will be their first visit to hospital. You'll be given all the information you need before being admitted and again you can ask your breast care nurse if you have any concerns. Take pyjamas that you feel comfortable in for after your surgery but remember you will need to be able to remove them easily for the staff to check your wounds so often button up pyjama tops are best. You might want to take some squash with you to add to the water that you're encourage to drink and take some magazine or light reading for when you're feeling a bit better after your surgery. Most wards have a contact number for relatives and friends which you can give to your family and friends should they wish to contact you.

After surgery

After coming home from hospital you will need to take things easy for a little while. Make sure that you have help at home and that you don't do any lifting or strenuous housework. You're body will tell you when you're ready to start doing light chores around the house. When people offer to do things to help you they really mean it so don't be afraid to let them. It often makes them feel better to be able to help.

Diet and Exercise

When you're starting to feel better then gentle exercise such as walking will aid in your recovery and make you feel better. Don't do anything too strenuous. Now is not the time to be worrying about losing weight or keeping fit. The main priority now is to look after you and to get well.

Future fears

There will come a time when your main treatment has been carried out and your cancer care team don't need to see you quite so often. For some people this can feel a little daunting because you've become so used to having regular checks and because you may have fears that your cancer will return. Again, talk to your breast care nurse. She will be able to tell you what to look out for and hopefully allay your fears.

About the Author:

Want to find out more about tongue cancer, then visit our site on how to choose the best cancer stages for your needs.

Breast Cancer Symptom

By Katherina Dearmitt

Because hypertension is a silent disease you may feel fine but be a walking time-bomb. Most people don't even there are many different forms of breast cancer. Some spread rapidly and are unpredictable, while others grow slowly and may go undetected for years. While the most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump or nodule within the breast, there are several other symptoms that may also indicate its presence.

Lumps that appear in the breasts prior to menstruation and disappear or reduce in size after the cycle, are not worrisome. These types of lumps are referred to as fibrocystic change and are thought to be caused by hormonal changes within the body. If lumps continue to grow in size and do not disappear after the menstrual cycle, you should consult with a physician.

Localized pain may occur in one or both breasts at various times throughout a woman's life. It is rarely a symptom of breast cancer; but new and persistent discomfort in only one breast may be a sign of breast cancer. If breast pain continues for more than one week, contact your doctor.

Occasionally, women will experience a slight discharge of clear liquid from the nipples of both breasts. This generally occurs due to a hormone imbalance and will dissipate within 24 to 48 hours. However, if nipple discharge occurs in only one breast and has any signs of blood, it may be cause for concern.

Skin rashes can occur on the breasts due to chemical irritants such as laundry detergent or underarm deodorant. However, if a skin rash appears on the breast that resembles eczema, or if dry scales appear around the nipples, this could be a sign of Paget's disease.

Symptoms of Paget's disease include itching, redness, and soreness of the nipple. Paget's disease always signals the presence of primary ductal carcinoma elsewhere in the breast tissue. Primal ductal carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer.

Swelling of the breasts can occur prior to the menstrual cycle or during pregnancy. If swelling is accompanied by redness or warmth, it may be a sign of Inflammatory Breast Cancer. IBC is a rare, but aggressive form of breast cancer that can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Other symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer may include a pitting of the skin surrounding the breast. This pitted appearance resembles the texture of an orange and is called peau d' orange. Pitting of the breast is caused by a buildup of fluid, which causes edema (swelling) in the breast.

The most common breast cancer symptoms include:
- A lump or thickening of the breast.
- A change in the size or shape of a breast.
- A change in the size or shape of a nipple.
- A bloody discharge from a nipple.
- A rash on the skin around the nipple or on the breast.
- Pitting or dimpling of the skin.
- Swelling or lumps in the armpit.

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult with your physician. Chances are good that these signs are not breast cancer. However, if breast cancer is diagnosed, your chances for recovery improve significantly through early detection.

About the Author:

Learn more about proton therapy for prostate cancer. Most women experience night sweats, fatigue, and hot flashes.

However there is new research that suggests that acupuncture may be more effective than antidepressants at helping to ease some of these side effects. This study compared the effectiveness of drug therapy to acupuncture. It was determined that acupuncture was just as effective as drug therapy while having no side effects.

The study also showed that the effects of the acupuncture lasted longer. The acupuncture patients didn't begin having symptoms until about 15 weeks after stooping treatment while it only took about two weeks after stopping drug therapy for the symptoms to return in those women.

In this study, acupuncture was compared to the use of the antidepressants in women who had breast cancer. Each woman was assigned randomly to receive a twelve week course of acupuncture or the antidepressants. Immediately before the beginning of study, those women participating in the study reported having a minimum of fourteen hot flashes per week.

At the conclusion of the study intervention, both groups reported similar improvements in menopausal symptoms including hot flashes. However, while many women who were in the antidepressant group experienced trouble shooting, constipation, headache, dry mouth, nausea, and other side effects, the group who had the acupuncture experienced none of these side effects.

Through this study it has also been determined that the practice of acupuncture can potentially increase a woman's sex drive while improving her sense of well being and help reduce hot flashes in breast cancer patients.

The study, which has been published in The Journal of Oncology, suggests that when compared to traditional drug therapy, acupuncture is more effective in reducing night sweats and hot flashes for women who are receiving hormone therapy for breast cancer treatment.

Acupuncture, when performed by a licensed acupuncturist, offers the patients a durable, effective, and safe treatment option for hot flashes, which is something that affects the majority of breast cancer survivors. Acupuncture actually has benefits when compared to drug therapy which have more side effects. Patients also reported that acupuncture increased their energy and improved their thought clarity.

While acupuncture has very few side effects, it is important to seek out a fully trained licensed acupuncturist rather than going to a medical doctor or chiropractor with a few hours training in acupuncture calling themselves "medical acupuncturist".

About the Author:

Looking to find the best deal on breast cancer treatment options, then visit www.cancer-prostate77.com to find the best advice on prostrate cancer treatment for you.

Cosmetic Surgery Is Becoming More Popular Everyday

By Enrique Castillano

We live in a world where everyone is concerned with their looks and aging is a thing of the past. Men and women strive to get better bodies, fewer wrinkles and generally look better than they already do. Cosmetic surgery is a way to reduce the signs of aging and to perfect any flaws you feel your body may have.

This specialty area, also known as Plastic Surgery is mostly known for vanity reasons and aesthetic purposes. Many people do not realize that plastic surgery also includes reconstructive surgery, hand surgery and burns. Although most forms of cosmetic or plastic surgery are done under full anesthetic there are a few smaller procedures which can be done with local unaesthetic and in the doctors chair.

If you want to you can pretty much change anything about yourself. The most common surgeries however are breast lifts, reductions and enlargements, nose jobs, liposuction, Chin and cheek implants, eyelid surgery, face lifts and tummy tucks.

Another trend which is on the rise is the Brazilian Butt Lift which uses fat grafting or silicon implants to lift the buttocks and gives a more shapely behind.

Chemical peels reduce the appearance of acne scarring, chicken pox scars and wrinkles; this is one procedure which can be done as an outpatient procedure during your lunch hour. Other common surgeries which can be done with a small amount of local anesthetic are, Lip enhancement surgery, and laser skin resurfacing.

If you are considering a cosmetic procedure make sure that you consult with medical professionals who are renowned in their trade and come with personal references. Be certain that this is something that you want to embark on. Cosmetic surgery is not cheap and could put a serious strain on your wallet so it is something that should take careful consideration.

About the Author:

Enrique Castillano also writes about Cosmetic Surgery for Spanish Language websites including Cirugia Estetica and Depilacion Laser

How To Find The Right Natural Breast Enhancement

By Devin Zuberg

For women, there are a lot of ways to enhance their breasts but when surgery is a scary option, Natural breast enhancementmight be the best avenue. Clark

Women everywhere are at a sexual advantage if they have large, firm breasts. In an attempt to satisfy the average woman's desire to have larger, more voluptuous looking breasts, science and technology produced breast implants. However, millions of women, however much as they want to enlarge their breasts, do not want anybody cutting into their bodies and inserting these devices. Looking for a safer alternative, many of these women have turned to Natural breast enhancement for the solution to their problem.

For centuries before medical science confirmed that they worked, women have been using natural, herbaceous pills, potions and lotions to enlarge and enhance their breasts. Ancient records prove that two herbs, fennel and fenugreek, have been used as effective folk remedies for centuries. These two ingredients are found in many of the best herbal breast augmentation products on the market today.

Both of these natural herbs have a proven estrogen-like effect on the body. Estrogen has two effects on the breasts of women (and men, in rare cases). First it increases fluid retention in the breasts. Secondly, it has the effect of swelling breast tissue. These are not theories, they are facts. It is a fact that a properly formulated natural breast enhancement pill can result in larger, firmer breasts.

If this is the case, then why aren't more women using these products. Millions of women are, but others have been scared off by some of the warnings issued by segments of the medical establishment. These warnings are interesting, because all they are saying is that these natural ingredients have not been proven to be safe. Why don't they issue similar warnings about breast implants? Those have certainly been proven to be unsafe. These natural products have shown no indication of being unsafe. Is the medical establishment biased?

While it is true that more research should be done on the effects of these herbaceous products, it is also true that aside from a dearth of long term clinical trials, there is the evidence of the centuries that women have enjoyed watching their breasts grow in size and firmness using formulas with natural ingredients without suffering any undue side effects whatsoever. In fact, many of the best products on the market also include ingredients that ease menstrual cramps and that is something that any woman would welcome!

When it comes right down to it, women everywhere feel more feminine and confident if they have large, alluring breasts. Natural breast enhancers can help them achieve this goal and there is no evidence whatsoever to prove that they are dangerous or ineffective. Therefore, there should be no reason not to use them.

A final word of caution. Not all of these products are equally effective. Do your homework and choose one that has a record of satisfied customers.

About the Author:

Looking to find the definititve source of information on Natural breast enhancement?

What Now After Mastectomy?... Know Your Breast Reconstruction Options

By Dr Chrysopoulo

Breast reconstruction is not a cosmetic procedure. It's a right every woman has when faced with mastectomy after breast cancer. Fortunately, there are several reconstructive options.

When the breast reconstruction is performed at the same setting as the mastectomy it is referred to as "immediate" reconstruction. The biggest advantage of immediate reconstruction is that the patient wakes up from the surgery still "whole" and completely avoids having to live without a breast. Other advantages include shorter scars and, generally speaking, a better cosmetic result.

Some patients do not have access to a reconstructive surgeon at the time of the mastectomy. Other patients are advised to avoid immediate reconstruction because radiation therapy is likely after the mastectomy. In these cases, the reconstruction can be performed some time after the mastectomy. This is known as "delayed reconstruction".

Tissue expander reconstruction is the most common method of breast reconstruction in the United States. Most plastic surgeons perform this as a two-stage procedure. The expander is used to stretch the skin envelope and create the size of breast the patient and plastic surgeon desire. The expander is replaced by a permanent breast implant (saline or silicone) at a separate procedure some time later. Some patients are candidates for one-step implant reconstruction (without expanders): a permanent breast implant is inserted immediately without going through the whole expansion process. In the one-step implant reconstruction the implant is completely covered by the pectoralis muscle and an acellular dermal graft (like Alloderm or FlexHD). These grafts are cadaveric tissue implants that provide support and increase the amount of padding over the implant.

Implant reconstruction is completely different to cosmetic breast augmentation with implants. Since there is a lot less tissue padding over the implant (it is removed by the mastectomy), the risk of developing implant-related problems like hardening is much higher in mastectomy patients. Implant reconstructions generally speaking also do not do as well as tissue reconstructions in the setting of radiation.

The Latissimus flap is one of the most common tissue reconstructions performed in this country. It uses the skin, fat and muscle (latissimus dorsi muscle) from the mid-back. This tissue is tunneled under the armpit skin and onto the chest to recreate the breast mound. Some women will also require an implant under this tissue for additional breast volume. The loss of function from moving the latissimus muscle is generally very well tolerated in all but the most active women.

TRAM flap surgery is a common procedure that uses skin, fat and varying amounts of the sit-up muscle (rectus abdominis) from the lower abdomen. The tissue (or flap) is then relocated to the chest to create the new breast. This procedure also results in a tightening of the lower abdomen, or a "tummy tuck". Unfortunately, sacrifice of all or part of the abdominal muscle can result in bulging (or "pooching") of the abdomen and even a hernia.

Over the last decade or so, the TRAM has been replaced by the DIEP flap as the new breast reconstruction gold standard. The DIEP provides a natural, warm, soft reconstruction together with an improved abdominal contour, just like the TRAM flap. However, unlike the TRAM, the DIEP flap spares the abdominal muscles completely. The tissue is disconnected from the body completely and reattached at the chest using microsurgery. This makes the post-op recovery easier and also significantly decreases the risk of abdominal bulging and hernia.

Some women are not candidates for these abdominal tissue flaps. Other tissue reconstruction options include the sGAP (upper buttock), iGAP (lower buttock), and TUG (upper inner thigh) flap procedures. All these procedures provide natural reconstructions with additional body contouring benefits (buttock or inner thigh lift respectively).

Like the DIEP flap, the GAP and TUG flap procedures are unfortunately not offered by most plastic surgeons as they require advanced training in microsurgery and reimbursement is very low. Only about 40 surgeons in the US perform these advanced breast reconstruction procedures routinely.

About the Author:

Dr Chrysopoulo is a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction, particularly DIEP flap breast reconstruction. When you initially approach a plastic surgeon you should discuss your expectations with them so that you are both on the same platform.

They will be able to guide you on what you can realistically expect after a breast implant surgery. Most surgeons will not actually tell you the exact size that you will get after the surgery. They will however focus on achieving a look based on a picture or a computer generated image. If you have a particular size of breasts in mind, carry a picture along to help in the discussion.

To select the right size for yourself, first learn about the correct size of your breasts at present. Either a bra fitting session or a measurement at the plastic surgeon's office will indicate the existing size.

Take a picture of your existing proportions to the plastic surgeon who can superimpose the proposed size over the existing size and give you an idea of what you will be likely to look like. Some surgeons are equipped with software programs that can virtually show you what your figure will look like post surgery.

You can try on false implants that you can insert into your bra and assess how you would look after the actual breast implant surgery.

If you want to enhance your cup size by two or three times, the skin around the breasts will be susceptible to stretch marks. These stretch marks will not go away on their own so you will need to get them erased through laser treatment. These laser treatments are usually carried out during the recovery stage. If you want to avoid stretch marks, try going in for a size that is just one cup size or half a cup size larger than your present size.

Once you have settled on a size be means of a software program or on the basis of false implants, consult a close family member or friend to get their opinion. They will help you decide if your expectations from the surgery are realistic and whether the augmented size will really suit your figure and improve your look.

Finally, make sure you get a good plastic surgeon for the procedure. They should be willing to advise you on various options as well as guide on safety precautions.

About the Author:

If you like to find out more about breast implant surgery, check out our site today.
